What they need to understand is, there is a vast difference between a professional Psychologist/Counsellor and a person who uses some counselling skills as part of their role, for example as a friend or as a family member. A professional Psychologist is a highly-trained person who is able to use a diverse spectrum of counselling approaches with their clients to deal with their emotional and behavioural problems.

  • Counselling is a therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with your issues.
  • Hoping a client to behave as the counsellor would behave if confronted with a similar problem in her/his own life.
  • Trying to solve the problems of the client.
  • Giving suggestions/advices to the client
  • Making the client emotionally dependent on the Psychologist
  • Being non judgemental
  • Judging the client
  • Being empathetic towards the client
  • Scolding the client
  • Being an active and a good listener-Allowing clients to share their feelings and thoughts uninterrupted.
  • Interrupting the client time and again
  • Thinking about your response instead of listening to what the client is saying
  • Being unbiased- showing no prejudice for or against something.
  • Looking at a client’s problems from your own viewpoint, based on your own value system.
  • Establishing clear boundaries with the clients
  • Getting emotionally involved with the client.
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Sharing issues/concerns of the client with others without the client’s permission.
